Our hearts are very heavy not only in the State of Connecticut, but all across the world, after having heard the terrible news that a gunman opened fire in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. The news has reported that 27 people are confirmed dead, 18 of which were children. My family only lives 25 minutes away from this quiet rural town, known especially as a working class town of good and friendly neighbours.

What am I supposed to tell my children today?!!! My kids are their ages too! The Sandy Hook Elementary School is Kindergarten through 4th Grade; the ages of the children range from 5 to 10 years of age – can you imagine the horror they witnessed?!

There is something we can do to help our precious little ones and that is to talk about violence, the range of it, and the after effects. Sadly, it’s becoming more and more common, even a few days ago, a lone gunman opened fire in an Oregon Mall killing innocent bystanders to then aim it his way! Why do they have to take people down with them if they are so horribly miserable?!!!

The Principal at our school has respectfully not informed our children. However, she has recommended we read and use helpful tips and pointers from the National Association of School Psychologists website (click the link): Talking To Children And Parents About Violence.
