What The Heck Does Undulating Mean? First Hand Report From The Front Line to Paris

London to Paris Challenge

Well, ladies and gentlemen this is what I know so far – undulating has a whole new meaning. According to dictionary.reference.com it is the following:

un·du·late

http://sp.dictionary.com/dictstatic/d/g/speaker.swf [v. uhn-juh-leyt, uhn-dyuh-, -duh-; adj. uhn-juh-lit, -leyt, uhn-dyuh-, -duh-]  Show IPA verb, -lat·ed, -lat·ing, adjective

verb (used without object)

1. to move with a sinuous or wavelike motion; display asmooth rising-and-falling or side-to-side alternation ofmovement: The flag undulates in the breeze.
2. to have a wavy form or surface; bend with successivecurves in alternate directions.
3. (of a sound) to rise and fall in pitch: the wail of a sirenundulating in the distance.

______

Well, I don’t think it looks like that in Jeff, Neil, Nancy, and Suzanne’s world right now! When I did this very bike ride 2 years ago, my words to describe the hillsides were not so kind! I spent 3 days asking every individual what their thoughts were on the word undulating. I honestly couldn’t let it go! The French cyclists said ‘You know, heely‘. The Americans had only explitives and pointed out we usually drive everywhere, so undulating was never really a word!

Jeffrey Currie and Neil Weidner before take off!

Jeff has reported that the group started cycling around 9:30 am yesterday morning in one of the most glorious days England had to offer! It was a swift start, cycling into the first hour, all was good until the hills. The undulating hills that is! He said that he and Neil took them in stride at first, but soon found themselves pumping up until the lowest gears failed to get them up – ouch! What is that? Are you at the 17% gradient boys?

Apparently Nancy and Suzanne are taking the ride in stride,

Nancy and Suzanne at the second stop

appreciating Mother Nature’s work at its finest. Unless you are a die-hard cycling nut, when else does one really get to smell life outside the big cities in the morning – how romantic!

I know I know I know, I need to be nice, but honestly have not heard ‘BOO’ about their thoughts on this challenge! Maybe they’re saving the best for last? Or maybe they don’t want to admit defeat yet?

I am sincerely jealous of every peddling moment and wish I could be there! And remember this is for a good cause – The Haven Breast Cancer Support Centre in London! So far this team has raised a little over £12,000 – REMARKABLE!!!!

There’s no defeat here – they will ride and finish! And like any cancer survivor will say, it’s not over until the fat lady sings!
